It is a challenge to pick up a business periodical these days without confronting another article or commentary about the impending cataclysm facing retailers as a result of “online retailing.” This article performs a careful assessment of the facts surrounding the issue and offers a more in-depth analysis on the state of the retail industry. Somewhat surprisingly, given the amount of press already devoted to the topic, a significant number of very important facts have received little to no comment and may well be a considerable surprise to our readers. The big “surprises” generally fall into the following categories:
